Costa del Sol Equestrian Tour – Frenchman Olivier Robert fends off young British talent

(Mijas)  His home may be in Paris, but at the moment he can be found riding in Spain – the winner of the first Grand Prix of the Winter Cup at the Costa del Sol Equestrian Tour in Mijas. The 40-year-old Frenchman won the World Ranking show-jumping competition with Eros, completing the Jump Off almost a second faster than Brit Harry Charles with Vivaldi du Dom. Harry is just 16 years old and the son of team Olympic champion Peter Charles. The number of Grand Prix placings is therefore quite manageable considering the age of the rider in second place…

Harry Charles also flew the British flag at the European Championships and was in Mijas in the Autumn with his father. Another Brit took third place: William Funnell, who was team European Champion in 2013. Top-performing German competitor was Tobias Meyer (Neunkirchen) with Bogota. The 28 year old came eighth. In total, 41 pairs took part in the first Grand Prix of the 2017 Winter Cup.

Benjamin Wulschner from Wendorf secured an impressive victory in the Masters Tour (1.40m). The Mecklenburg rider piloted Ryters Quinton, in 24.41 fault-free seconds, into first place. Two days before, Wulschner Jun. had been responsible for the first German win in Mijas. Also amongst the pros who are already kicking off the outdoor season in Mijas is Mike-Patrick Leichle from Schnarup-Thumby in Schleswig-Holstein. And the pro rider and his wife Karina Leichle Truelsen have brought a whole squadron of horses and trainees with them to Spain, including Hong Kong Chinese riders Raena Leung and Ella Wang. On Monday the Winter Cup will have a rest day, but on Tuesday the second of three tournament weeks at the Winter Cup in Mijas, Analusia, will get going with more competitions for the young horses.
